This Old Box
No matter how old you are, you probably have saved special items from your past that bring nostalgic memories. As I reminisced, I was surprised to learn that most of the mementos of the first 30 years of my life easily fit into a small box. Each one brought feelings of shame and regret.
Just like everyone else, I started out as an innocent young child. But as I grew older, I wanted to experience all the pleasures this world has to offer. At first, I thought it was fun, and I thought I was in control. Parties, drugs, alcohol and lust became my everyday life. However, each sin bore another, and it wasn’t long until I was so deep, I was unable to free myself. Sin had imprisoned me.
Proverbs 5:22 – “His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins.”
My best friend was very popular in high school. He was a quarterback on the football team. He volunteered his summers as a camp counselor for underprivileged kids and was an all around good guy.
We played music in a band together for ten years. Then one Christmas day, in front of his beautiful wife and children, he died from the effects of cocaine. This wooden flute is all I have left to remember him.
Finally, on one drug soaked day, I saw my sad condition. I wondered, “What do I have to show for my life?” I was married with a young daughter, and I was ashamed of what I had become. I knew that if I stayed on the path I was on, I would end up dead just like all of my friends were. What kind of legacy would I leave my family? I knew I had to change, but on my own, I could not do it. God in His great mercy, began dealing with my heart.
2 Corinthians 7:10 – “For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.”
In deep, deep sorrow, I sought the Lord. Then He reached way down and gloriously freed me from the shackles that had me bound!
Psalms 34:18 – “The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
John 10:10 – “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”

2 Corinthians 5:17 – “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
Dear reader, I traded my life that was hopeless, and God gave me a life full of blessings. When I consider the contents of my new box, I am overwhelmed with thankfulness. A happy marriage, 6 grandchildren, three fine sons and three new daughters.
No matter where you are at in life, involved in the deepest darkest sin. You may feel like you have no hope. But my God is a God of hope, a mighty God and he will deliver you from all your sin if you would only come repent and turn from your sins.
Matthew 11:28 – “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
